In March 2021, I attended the Right Bank Representative – Saint-Émilion Industry Wine Tasting event, organized by the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Winery Association. The event was exclusive to people working in the wine industry who would receive invitations. They presented the “2018 vintage wines” from 19 member wineries, more than 400 professionals from the wine industry and media guests were invited to taste the 2018 vintage wines from 19 member wineries.
Additionally, each winery selected the same wine but from different years, allowing for a comparative tasting. It was a rare opportunity to fully experience the terroir expression of Saint-Émilion in Taipei.
What was the year 2018 like?
The 2018 vintage. In that year, after a winter with abundant rainfall, followed by a warm and humid spring, the flowering period began very early. The severe summer drought caused the version of the grapes to generally start earlier. The light rain in mid-September was quite helpful for the grapes. Subsequently, from September to October, there was daytime heat and cool nights, allowing the grapes to reach their optimal ripeness before harvest.

During the tasting event, each of the 19 members of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Winery Association selected a different vintage to showcase. By sampling wines from different years, guests could experience a delightful journey on their taste buds as if they were in Saint-Émilion, France.
